Casino de Monte Carlo
Casino de Monte Carlo is a gambling and entertainment complex in Monaco, with the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. Its Belle Époque façade stands beside formal gardens overlooking Monaco. Gobineau de la Bretonnerie designed the original building at Les Spelugues, a name meaning The Caves. Charles Garnier later reshaped the gaming rooms, public spaces and Salle Garnier in the Beaux-Arts style. The Salle Garnier connects the complex with opera and ballet. The casino also forms part of the Monaco Grand Prix route.
Princess Caroline proposed the casino during financial difficulties affecting Monaco’s ruling family. François Blanc later brought investment and helped establish Monte Carlo as the area’s name. The Société des Bains de Mer owns and operates the complex, with Monaco’s government and princely family holding majority interests. Monégasque citizens cannot enter the casino’s gaming rooms. The site has shaped Monaco’s image and economy through gambling, performance and grand architecture. Its stories include roulette, Joseph Jagger and the song The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo. The casino also appears in Madagascar 3 and inspired the Monte Carlo method.
