Velodromo Maspes-Vigorelli
Velodromo Maspes-Vigorelli stands in Milan as a sports venue shaped by cycling, concerts and American football. Built in 1935 to replace Velodromo Sempione, it presents a 399-metre track with 42-degree banking and Swedish pine surfaces.
Giuseppe Vigorelli, a former cyclist and Milanese sports figure, designed its semicircular form. Giuseppe Olmo set an hour record here shortly after the inauguration, while later cycling included World Championships and boxing featured a memorable 1963 match. The Beatles played here in 1965, followed by Led Zeppelin in 1971, adding music history to the sporting programme.
War damage led to reconstruction in 1946, while a closure in the late 1970s and a severe snowstorm in 1985 tested its survival. Private sponsorship supported its reopening in the late 1990s, and the central field now carries synthetic grass for American football. Seamen Milano and Rhinos Milano use the ground, where steep wooden banking still preserves the venue’s defining detail.
