San Luca Evangelista
San Luca Evangelista is a modernist church in Milan’s Città Studi district, near Via Vallazze. Architect Gio Ponti designed it during Milan’s urban expansion in the 1950s. Completed in 1959, it presents a central nave with two smaller side aisles beneath a gabled roof. Its reinforced-concrete frame gives the building a sturdy, geometric profile.
The plan keeps a conventional church arrangement while its materials place it firmly in mid-century modernism. Growing population around Via Vallazze led to a new parish in 1957. The gabled roof rests on a reinforced-concrete structure. Facets of ceramic tile cover the façade and form repeated cross patterns. Inside, stained-glass windows shape the balance of light and shadow. A vertical slit in the façade recalls Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp Chapel. Visitors find wheelchair access listed among the recorded features. The atmosphere remains serene and suited to reflection.
