Palazzo della Banca Commerciale Italiana

Palazzo della Banca Commerciale Italiana stands in Milan’s Piazza della Scala, opposite the grandeur of Teatro alla Scala. Luca Beltrami shaped the early-twentieth-century building in a neoclassical style suited to its former banking role. Banca Commerciale Italiana originally occupied the palace as its Milanese headquarters, placing financial power beside the city’s leading opera house.

Its facade brings a central pediment and large columns into a composition that echoes the nearby theatre. The neoclassical language gives the exterior a formal presence through symmetry, scale, and ordered stonework. Inside, decoration fills the grand hall and follows the sweeping staircase. Construction required the demolition of a Baroque church and a café linked to Milan’s Five Days.

Since 2011, Gallerie di Piazza Scala has occupied the building with artworks from the Fondazione Cariplo collection. The central pediment and columns give Piazza della Scala an architectural counterpart to La Scala. That deliberate relationship between bank and theatre remains the detail that most clearly defines the setting.
