Matteo Thun'scher Gucker
Matteo Thun'scher Gucker rises within the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano, northern Italy. The hillside gardens form an amphitheatre around the historic castle. Stainless steel gives the fifteen-metre viewing platform its clear, open structure. Matteo Thun designed it as a South Tyrolean architect and designer.
Completed in 2005, the platform projects from a circular steel construction into open air. About ninety-five percent of the structure remains see-through. Steps create the sensation of floating upwards towards the sky. Its telescope shape frames the Etsch Valley, the Merano basin, and more than a dozen castles and palaces. The Texel Group rises across the northern horizon. The surrounding gardens add themed areas, plant collections, paths, and further viewpoints.
A railing carries the words “only thoughts are free” as visitors look across the landscape. The gardens also contain the Touriseum and a high aviary with parrots and lorises.
