Castel Kallmünz

Castel Kallmünz stands in the heart of Meran, northern Italy, as a Tyrolean mansion shaped by residence and defence. Its bow-shaped residential house and stair tower give the complex its characteristic architectural profile. Four building sections surround an inner courtyard and a park tucked behind the parking area. A partly battlemented wall encloses the grounds, while trees and surrounding buildings conceal parts of the structure.

Strong cellar walls preserve the defensive character of the fourteenth century, when the building served military purposes. Andrä Kalmüntzer bought the property in the fifteenth century and settled there. Andreas von Heidenreich Pidenegg led renovations in 1631, shaping much of the appearance visible today. The von Stachlburg family owned the property until the nineteenth century, and an aristocratic family still holds it.

Private ownership keeps most rooms closed, while occasional exhibitions open selected interiors as galleries. The former economic building contains a restaurant, and the gardens host plays, summer performances, and Kallmünz Festival Merano. The ballroom also serves for events, linking the historic complex with Meran’s cultural life. From nearby streets, the battlements appear above the trees and buildings, offering a compact reminder of the city’s layered past.
