Gedenkstein Synagoge
Gedenkstein Synagoge stands in Memmingen on the site of the former synagogue, destroyed during the November pogroms of 1938. A memorial stone now marks the place where the synagogue once stood. Its surface bears the names of Jewish residents from Memmingen who were murdered during the Holocaust. The site is wheelchair accessible and offers a quiet setting for remembrance.
Each year, a memorial ceremony brings local groups and hundreds of participants to this location. Speeches and musical performances connect the history of Memmingen’s Jewish community with the continuing work of remembrance. The German-Israeli Society and the Catholic Workers’ Movement help organise the ceremony under the patronage of the mayor. The names carved into the stone leave the clearest impression: individual people remain present at the place where their community once gathered.
