Placa a la Colonia Santa Inés stands in Málaga, marking a historic workers’ settlement shaped by industrial production. The commemorative plaque appears on the façade of the José María Hinojosa Municipal Library, one of the area’s notable buildings. Its setting connects everyday neighbourhood life with Málaga’s industrial heritage and the families who lived beside the factory.

A brick, tile, and ceramic factory founded by Francisco Viana Cárdenas drove the settlement’s development in the late nineteenth century. By 1881, around 170 workers produced 20,000 bricks each day. Colonia Santa Inés provided homes for factory workers and their families, reflecting the paternalistic practices of that period. In 1924, Modesto Escobar Acosta expanded production, introduced machinery from the United Kingdom, and added community facilities.

A school, dispensary, and chapel supported the settlement alongside its industrial work. The surrounding area still features a distinctive water tower crowned with battlements, a memorable trace of its manufacturing past. The city council inaugurated the plaque through the Málaga Makes History programme, preserving the community’s contribution to the city.
