Placa a Alfonso Canales is a small square near Málaga’s port, where old Modernist buildings shape the surrounding streets. Several façades are undergoing restoration, while others show the effects of urban speculation.

The dedication recalls Alfonso Canales, a Málaga-born poet, literary critic and cultural advocate. He presided over the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Telmo. He also belonged to the Real Academia Española de la Lengua and the Real Academia de la Historia, and received the National Poetry Prize. His literary work includes Sonetos para pocos, El candado, Port Royal, Cuenta y razón and Tres oraciones fúnebres. His library, with almost twenty thousand volumes, later passed to the University of Málaga.

Málaga Hace Historia places the square among commemorations of the city’s significant people and events. Nearby, the contrast between restored façades and buildings left vulnerable to change gives this quiet spot a tangible historical character.
