Panteón de José Agustín Gómez García
The Panteón de José Agustín Gómez García is a nineteenth-century mausoleum in Málaga’s historic Cementerio de San Miguel. The cemetery began in the early nineteenth century. Its preserved entrance, chapel and surrounding mausoleums show the architecture of that period. Stone memorials fill the historic setting.
The mausoleum commemorates José Agustín Gómez García, who came from Villanueva de Cameros in Logroño. He settled in Málaga with his brother Juan. Around 1860, they founded Casa Gómez Hermanos, a textile business on Calle Especerías. In 1925, the company moved to number 10 Calle Larios.
This burial place also holds José Valcarce del Castillo, the engineer behind Málaga’s late nineteenth-century port remodelling. He was also a poet who won recognition for Oda al Hierro. José Gómez Mercado, businessman, deputy mayor in 1930 and Málaga Football Club president, is buried here too.
