Iglesia del Santo Cristo de la Salud

Iglesia del Santo Cristo de la Salud stands at the junction of Calle Compañía and Plaza de la Constitución in Málaga’s historic centre. Escuela de San Telmo and the Museo de la Colección Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza surround it. Jesuit builders created the church across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for education and religious work. Pedro Sánchez designed the temple on land donated by Bishop Blanco Salcedo. Its Baroque architecture combines an octagonal plan, a prominent dome, and Mannerist-influenced iconography.

The main façade and the altars of San Ignacio and San Francisco Javier belong to later seventeenth-century additions. José Martín de Aldehuela added a small chapel for San Pedro during the eighteenth century. After the Jesuits left, the building passed to Montepío de Socorro and then to the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País. The church serves as the canonical seat of the Cofradía de los Estudiantes and other religious associations. Its titular sculpture shows Jesus tied to a column and comes from José Micael y Alfaro. The image dates from 1633 and became associated with healing during a Málaga epidemic. Pedro de Mena’s tomb once stood here, but the tomb now rests in the Abbey of Santa Ana. A later conservation project preceded its reopening for worship and its recognition as a Cultural Interest Site.
