Sandauer Tor
Sandauer Tor stands at Vorderer Anger in Landsberg am Lech, Bavaria, within the town’s historic architecture. Its tower rises above the square, where fountains, historic buildings and open space shape the surrounding cityscape. Stonework connects the gate with the architectural character of southern German towns. The structure marks the transition between Landsberg’s old town and areas beyond its historic centre.
Town gates traditionally formed part of city fortifications, controlling movement and marking urban boundaries. This one belongs to a wider system of gates once linked with the old town walls. Its elevated tower gave guards a broad view across the surrounding area, while the entrance could close at night or during danger. Vorderer Anger’s fountains recall the practical role of water in earlier daily life, when people and animals relied on them. Today, the gate serves as a landmark and a point of reference beside the square. Look upward from the open space, and the tower stands clearly against the sky.
