Thalia Theater
Thalia Theater stands in Hamburg’s Altstadt, close to the Binnenalster and Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz. Its main building places you in the inner city, while wheelchair accessibility makes the venue easier to reach and explore.
Charles Maurice Schwartzenberger founded the theatre in 1843, naming it after Thalia, the muse of comedy and idyllic poetry. One of Germany’s renowned ensembles develops about nine new plays each season, with productions ranging from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Bertolt Brecht’s In the Jungle of Cities. A second stage, Thalia in der Gaußstraße, brings experimental and avant-garde theatre to Altona.
The contrast between both venues gives the theatre its distinctive range: a central Hamburg stage for established productions and an Altona setting for more exploratory work.
