Gästehaus des Senats
Gästehaus des Senats stands on a narrow tongue of land between Hamburg’s Außenalster and Feenteich. The villa occupies Uhlenhorst and presents white plaster façades across two and a half floors. Martin Haller designed it in 1868 as the residence of building-materials trader Johann Friedrich Krogmann.
After Krogmann’s death, merchant Adolf Oetling bought the property in 1880. Hamburg designated the building a cultural heritage site in 1958. It became the city’s official guest house for high-ranking visitors in 1965, beginning with Queen Elizabeth II and her husband. Later guests included Leonid Brezhnev, the Dalai Lama, Jassir Arafat, Henry Kissinger, and Donald Trump.
A 1986 renovation cost two and a half million marks, with interior decoration influenced by Christa von Dohnanyi. Bright colours, mainly white, meet rich stucco ornaments inside. The building also hosts events, including the Senatsfrühstück, where discussions address Hamburg’s food industry.
