Biosphärengebiet Schwäbische Alb
Biosphärengebiet Schwäbische Alb lies in Baden-Württemberg, stretching across the middle Swabian Alb and its foreland towards the Danube. The UNESCO-recognized reserve covers 85,270 hectares of forests, meadows, orchards, and open countryside. Around forty kilometres separate its northern and southern reaches, while the Albtrauf brings slope and gorge forests into view. Juniper heaths and traditional orchards add distinctive cultural landscapes to the scenery.
The reserve took shape after military use of the Münsingen training ground ended in 2005. The former grounds include Gruorn, an abandoned village surrounded by recovering landscapes. Red kites, peregrine falcons, and several orchid species live among these habitats. Industrial zones also form part of the area, where conservation meets model approaches to sustainable development.
Biosphärenzentrum Schwäbische Alb opened in 2010 as the main information centre for the region. Educational facilities extend that work across the surrounding communities. Hiking and cycling routes such as the Albsteig and Schwäbische-Alb-Radweg lead through this meeting point of nature, history, and rural culture.
