Feldkirche St. Ulrich und Afra
Feldkirche St. Ulrich und Afra stands in Füssen, Bavaria, beside the old main road and opposite the Waldfriedhof cemetery. Baroque forms shape its hall, gabled roof, and curved tent roof above the choir. An octagonal roof turret marks the eastern entrance, while a rounded stair tower serves the southern sacristy.
A field church probably stood near this site in the early Middle Ages, before moving beside the old main road. Written records first mention the church in the year 1504. After severe Thirty Years’ War damage, Johann Georg Fischer’s plans guided rebuilding in 1724 and 1725. The rebuilt church received its dedication to Saints Ulrich and Afra.
The high altar and pulpit are attributed to Joseph Fischer, both dating from 1725. Anton Sturm’s circle supplied the altar crucifix and the Sorrowful Mother. Similar choir stalls connect the interior with the nearby St Mang church, whose stalls date from the same period. The building mainly serves funeral services in Füssen. A niche holds the Sorrowful Mother beside the 1725 altar crucifix.
