Die Himmelsleiter
Die Himmelsleiter steht im Innenhof des Forschungsgebäudes am Universitätsklinikum Freiburg im Breisgau. Raimund Kummer designed this sculpture as an example of Kunst am Bau, integrating art with architecture and research.
A stainless steel shelf rises about nine metres high, measures four metres wide and extends 2.3 metres deep. Five levels organize the installation from its base to its top. The first and third levels carry blown Murano-glass drops in crystal, red and blue. Shackles secure the drops visibly to the steel structure. Nets occupy the second, fourth and fifth levels, using epoxy resin, finished glass fabric and protective UV coating. Their open forms contrast with the shelf’s rigid stainless steel frame.
Five Garpa deckchairs wait at the base, giving you a place to sit beside the sculpture. Glass, steel, resin and fabric bring laboratory precision together with playful colour and suspended forms.
