Franz Volhard
Franz Volhard was a German clinician and researcher born in Munich in 1872. His work connected kidney disease with cardiovascular conditions through nephrology and hypertension research.
Together with Theodor Fahr, he developed a classification of Bright’s disease that advanced understanding of glomerulonephritis. He led internal medicine departments at the Luisenhospital in Dortmund and in Mannheim. He later became chairman at the University of Halle before taking the same role at the University of Frankfurt in 1928. Frankfurt remained his workplace until 1938, where research and medical teaching continued through a difficult political period. His career joined clinical practice, investigation and university leadership across several German cities.
The International Society of Hypertension later honoured his contribution with the Franz Volhard Award.
