St. Nikolai

St. Nikolai stands in Waltersleben, Erfurt, as a protected Evangelical Lutheran church dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Its Romanesque hall church began with a choir tower, while the surrounding village setting places this historic architecture within Erfurt’s southern landscape.

Around 1600, builders replaced the apse with a rectangular extension, then largely renewed the nave in the early eighteenth century. A hipped roof and double-deck galleries between the chancel arch and triumphal arch mark these later changes. Structural problems ended worship in 1975, and the tower’s Baroque cap gave way to a temporary flat roof in 1984. Restoration after the turn of the millennium reshaped the building’s use: the tower now contains a worship hall, while the nave serves as a community centre behind glass doors.

Inside, an organ with eighteen stops connects the church to Johann Georg Schröter, who built it in 1721. Albin Hickmann & Comp. modified the instrument in 1900.
