Lutherdenkmal
Lutherdenkmal stands before Kaufmannskirche St. Gregor on the Anger, in the centre of Erfurt, Thuringia. The wheelchair-accessible monument shows Martin Luther holding an open Bible.
Berlin artist Fritz Schaper created the statue, which was unveiled in 1889 after Erfurt groups gathered support for its construction. Luther lived in Erfurt from 1501 to 1511. He studied at the University of Erfurt and served as a monk at the Augustinian Monastery, linking the city closely to his life. The church location recalls his sermon there in 1522, which settled a religious dispute.
Three scenes on the pedestal show Luther as a student, entering the monastery, and receiving a festive welcome at the university. His right hand rests on the Bible, while the pedestal front carries Psalm 118:17.
