Kriegspulvermagazin I.
Kriegspulvermagazin I. stands in Erfurt as a military structure dating from before 1728. Built on the city side of the fortress, it stored gunpowder during wartime away from attackers. That position reflects the defensive planning surrounding Erfurt’s historic fortifications.
In the mid-nineteenth century, the building gained separate floors and a staircase. During the 1860s, vaulted hollow spaces and an earth covering strengthened its protection against artillery fire. Test explosions by East Germany’s Ministry for State Security nearly destroyed the structure in the 1980s.
The earth-covered vaults remain the clearest detail of its original purpose, linking storage, fortification and explosive danger.
