Domplatz
Domplatz stands at the heart of Erfurt as a historic marketplace covering about three and a half hectares. Its western side frames Erfurt Cathedral and Severikirche, with seventy Domstufen rising between them. Basalt paving belongs to the church, while concrete stones belong to the city.
Trade, public gatherings and judicial proceedings once centred on this broad square. The Minerva Fountain dates from 1784, while the Erthal Obelisk honours the Elector of Mainz since 1777. Artillery bombardments destroyed the surrounding Severi Quarter in 1813, leaving the square larger than before. Peaceful demonstrations during the 1989 and 1990 revolution also brought crowds here.
Today, market stalls and major events animate the open space throughout the year. The Erfurt Christmas Market fills the square, while the Domstufen-Festspiele use the cathedral steps as their stage. Gasthaus Zur Hohen Lilie and the Grüne Apotheke add historic façades, with Petersberg Citadel nearby.
