Danakil Wüsten- und Urwaldhaus
Danakil Wüsten- und Urwaldhaus stands inside egapark in Erfurt, combining desert and rainforest environments beneath one roof. The building measures 83 metres long and 35 metres wide, with connected sections shaped around water. Inside, snakes, meerkats, mice, turtles, fish, lizards and butterflies illustrate how life adapts to extreme conditions.
Landscape scanners, soil cross-sections and explanatory displays show how scarce or abundant water changes ecosystems. Desert plants store water or survive with little, while tropical plants compete for sunlight in warm, humid surroundings. The exhibition also links climate, species and sustainable ways of planting and using water.
Around the building, white exposed-concrete climate rings form planting beds for vegetation from different climate zones. Each ring measures about 10 metres across, and floral patterns suggest monstera leaves, algae and lichens.
