Alter jüdischer Friedhof
Alter jüdischer Friedhof stands in Erfurt as a historic burial place for the city’s Jewish community. The cemetery dates from 1811. Its gravestones mark the return of Jewish settlement after more than 300 years away from Erfurt.
The burial ground served the growing community until a larger cemetery opened in 1878. Jewish belief in eternal rest kept the older site in place. Antisemitic vandalism damaged it in 1926 and during the November pogroms of 1938. The city confiscated the grounds, and workers had removed the gravestones by 1944.
After the Second World War, the land returned to the Jewish community before pressure forced its sale back to the city. Garages built during the 1960s used remnants of the gravestones. Restoration began in 2007, removing the garages and bringing some gravestones back, while a memorial stone added in 1996 preserves the site’s history.
