St. Mariä Himmelfahrt - Liebfrauen

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt - Liebfrauen stands in Düsseldorf’s Flingern-Nord district as a Roman Catholic parish church. Its neo-Gothic design forms a three-aisled hall with transepts and a cross-shaped floor plan. Yellow brick, stone detailing and a square bell tower shape the building’s exterior.

Caspar Clemens Pickel designed the church, which rose between 1890 and 1892. Wartime destruction led to reconstruction between 1947 and 1949, including a blunter pyramidal tower roof. In the early 1960s, Gottfried Böhm redesigned the interior with contemporary stained-glass windows, including work by Hans Lünenborg.

Colours and light fill the interior, where Joseph Hennefeld’s Kreuzweg provides a major artwork. The organ originated at St. Vinzenz in Düsseldorf-Flingern in 1967 and moved here in 2002. Its expanded form contains twenty-seven registers, while Sommernachtsmusik brings cultural events into the church during the summer holidays. A ramp provides access to the building.
