Schloss Benrath

Schloss Benrath stands in Düsseldorf’s Benrath district as a Baroque pleasure palace built for Elector Palatine Charles Theodor and his wife. Construction ran from 1755 to 1770 under Nicolas de Pigage, the garden and building director. The central corps de logis faces two symmetrical arched wings, creating a formal ensemble around the Schlossweiher.

The corps de logis now houses a museum with guided tours through the former residence. The eastern wing contains the Museum for European Garden Art, while the western wing contains the Museum of Natural History. Together, the buildings preserve courtly rooms, servant quarters and a direct connection between architecture, gardens and natural collections. The Alte Orangerie remains as the only surviving structure from the predecessor castle.

A Baroque square hunting park surrounds the palace with two diagonal avenues and a circular avenue. On the southern side, the long rectangular Spiegelweiher reflects the estate’s carefully planned geometry. The round Schlossweiher, partly enclosed by the two wings, gives the palace ensemble its most distinctive visual detail.
