Kreuzkirche

Kreuzkirche stands in Düsseldorf’s Pempelfort district, close to the borders of Golzheim and Derendorf. Built between 1907 and 1910, the church presents a Neo-Romanesque design by architect Carl Wilhelm Schleicher. Its Greek-cross plan draws on the Cathedral of Speyer, Bad Homburg’s Church of the Redeemer, and St Margareta in Gerresheim. Heilbronn sandstone gives the exterior a monumental presence, while broad arched windows bring daylight through the gable façades.

An octagonal central bell tower rises beneath a tent roof, surrounded by four smaller towers with diamond-shaped roofs. The Evangelical Church Community of Düsseldorf-Mitte inaugurated the building on 21 September 1910. Air raids in April and November 1944 damaged the tower, roofs, and areas behind the apse, while the original Gustav Wittschas windows were destroyed. Repairs and reconsecration followed during the late 1940s and early 1950s, with Ernst Otto Köpke’s replacement windows installed in 1959 and 1960.

The surviving interior includes a lighting system added during renovations in 2005. Steel bells replaced the bronze bells melted down for cannon production during the war. The 1966 Alexander Schuke organ contains 45 registers and approximately 3,500 pipes.
