Ehemaliges Konsulat USA

Ehemaliges Konsulat USA stands in Düsseldorf as a protected monument and a documented work of postwar architecture. Built in 1953, the four-storey structure presents International Style through glass, aluminium profiles, travertine panels, and a steel frame. Its southern section rises above an open column hall, while a single-storey flat extension occupies the northeast side.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the building, and architect Otto Apel carried the design into its Düsseldorf setting. A six-by-six-metre modular grid gives the structure its measured organisation. Extensive glazing reinforces the intended impression of transparency and lightness across the main building. The original diplomatic role shaped the site, which housed the United States Consulate before its relocation. In the early 1990s, the building was modernised after the consulate moved elsewhere, and added security installations were removed.

Between 1997 and 1998, Christoph Ingenhoven and Ingenhoven Associates led further renovations and added an extension on the former parking lot. The extension occupies that former parking area beside the four-storey main block. Aluminium profiles and travertine panels give the façade a visible contrast against the extensive glass.
