Alter Bahnhof Oberkassel
Alter Bahnhof Oberkassel stands at Belsenplatz in Düsseldorf’s Oberkassel district, where a former railway station now houses a gastropub. The present building dates from 1896 and includes a tower room once reserved for first-class passengers. Its railway history began in 1853, when the Aachen-Neuss-Düsseldorf Railway Company opened the line.
Electric trams changed the station’s role: the K-Bahn connected Düsseldorf with Krefeld through Meerbusch from 1898. Passenger services ended in 1902, while freight traffic continued through 1972. After decades of decline and other uses, the building returned to hospitality following a major renovation in the 1990s.
Jürgen Flohr and Klaus Unterwainig have operated the gastropub since 2007, and the house has brewed its own beer since 2008. Residential buildings and Belsenpark now occupy much of the former railway grounds, placing this preserved station beside a modern neighbourhood.
