Schloss Schönfeld (Zauberschloss)

Schloss Schönfeld, also called the Zauberschloss, stands in Dresden’s Schönfeld district with Renaissance architecture and magical arts. Its story began as a medieval water castle before the building became a Renaissance castle in the sixteenth century. Hans von Dehn-Rothfelser acquired the castle in 1543 and helped reshape the former fortress. Later owners included Georg Cracow and Elector Friedrich August III. The surrounding moat and pond frame the castle on three sides. Its compact structure preserves a hexagonal staircase tower and a sandstone entrance portal. Many rooms retain painted wooden beam ceilings from earlier periods. Eighteenth-century stucco ceilings and remnants of late Renaissance wall paintings add further interior detail. The castle also served as a court, financial court, newspaper office, kindergarten, and library. Its name now reflects a strong connection with magic. The Kunst- und Kulturverein Schloss Schönfeld and Magischer Zirkel Dresden use the building for public magic shows, cultural events, and a museum of magical arts. Schloss Schönfeld therefore brings together preserved architecture, changing civic history, and performances under one roof.
