DOC - Dortmunder Centrum für Medizin und Gesundheit
DOC, short for Dortmunder Centrum für Medizin und Gesundheit, stands in Dortmund as a medical and health centre with a documented architectural history. Harald Deilmann designed the building in Dortmund for WestLB. Construction took place between 1975 and 1978, when the building served as a bank for WestLB. Its architectural form draws directly on Pop Art. Bronze-coloured aluminium surfaces and gold-coated sun-protection glass define the preserved exterior. Dortmund recognised the building as a heritage site in 2011. After WestLB dissolved, Eller + Eller Architekten converted the former bank into a medical centre. The renovation retained key elements of Deilmann’s original design. Inside, medical practices gather around a central atrium with visual connections towards the outside. A bright central atrium anchors the interior. Formerly inaccessible terraces now form green rooftop gardens associated with the centre. New windows improve thermal insulation and sun protection. The building shows how a listed Dortmund structure can support contemporary healthcare while preserving its distinctive architectural language. The centre is recorded as wheelchair accessible for visitors.
