HDMS Sælen
HDMS Sælen is a former Royal Danish Navy submarine preserved as a museum ship in Copenhagen. The vessel began life as HNoMS Uthaug, built for Norway in 1965. Denmark acquired it in 1990, and the submarine served its fleet until 2003. Its Kobben-class design suited the shallow waters around Scandinavia.
At 47.2 metres long, the submarine displaces 485 tonnes when submerged. Electric motors powered underwater travel, while diesel engines recharged the batteries after surfacing. Inside, original equipment, bunks, control panels and navigation instruments remain in place. The Cold War design reflects a focus on stealth, surveillance and manoeuvrability.
Torpedo tubes and a periscope reveal the technology used beneath the waves. Narrow passageways show how closely the crew worked together during service. Copenhagen’s long naval history gains a tangible setting inside this preserved vessel.
