Green Point Athletics Stadium
Green Point Athletics Stadium stands in Cape Town beside Cape Town Stadium, creating a dedicated setting for sport and athletics. A 400-metre track anchors the venue. Local and national athletics meets use the track, giving the stadium a role in Cape Town’s sporting calendar. Concerts have also taken place here.
The present stadium, completed in early 2013, occupies the main-stand site of the former Green Point Stadium. That earlier ground opened in 1897. Its concrete banked cycle track supported motorsport, while cricket, football and concerts by Michael Jackson and U2 brought wider audiences. Partial demolition followed in 2007, making way for Cape Town Stadium and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. An LED retrofit replaced high-intensity discharge floodlights and reduced power demand by 33 percent.
