Église Notre-Dame-d'Espérance
Église Notre-Dame-d'Espérance stands on Place de la Castre, in Suquet, Cannes’s oldest neighbourhood in the Alpes-Maritimes. Its Gothic structure combines a Renaissance porch with a square Romanesque bell tower, once part of the castle walls.
Construction began in 1521 with funding from Cannes residents, but invasions, plague and limited resources prolonged the work for about a century. Worship began after completion in the seventeenth century. Inside, a single nave opens onto side chapels decorated by Cannes artisan guilds, with a semicircular choir beyond. A large Italian organ from Pavia rises above the entrance, while the chapels hold a Burgundian sculpture of Saint Anne, the Virgin and Child, a carved wooden altar, and a fifteenth-century crucifix. Historic-monument protection links the church with the Castre tower and Sainte-Anne chapel.
Twelve crosses on the pillars mark its consecration, while the bell tower frames views across Cannes, the Esterel mountains and the bay.:VEVENT
