Church of Saint Mark

In Cairo, Church of Saint Mark rises with pale walls and carved crosses beneath the Egyptian sunlight. Its basilica form gives the building a calm, solid presence. Six marble pillars frame the entrance, while two Italian bells crown the towers.

According to Coptic tradition, Saint Mark brought Christianity to Egypt nearly two thousand years ago. A sanctuary stood here as early as the first century, then successive buildings followed wars, fires, and invasions. The present structure took shape in the mid-twentieth century, using concrete while retaining the basilica design. Each rebuilding added another layer to the long history of worship held within these walls.

Inside, incense and shimmering icons create a setting that feels ancient while remaining active in the present. The Coptic community gathers here for prayer, celebration, and remembrance. Relics of Saint Mark, once carried to Venice, have partly returned and are honoured here. At the entrance, six cool marble columns offer the clearest detail of the church’s enduring character.
