Sankt Remberti

Sankt Remberti is an evangelical church community in Bremen’s Schwachhausen district, near the Riensberg area. The church and its community house form a protected historical monument and are wheelchair accessible. Bright rooms, a spiral staircase and spaces for youth activities extend the site beyond worship.

The story began with a chapel near a hospital in Pagentorn during the early fourteenth century. Johann Bornemacher preached Lutheran reform here before his execution in 1526. A half-timbered church from 1596 became Bremen’s first church built after the Reformation. Later buildings included a plain hall church and a neo-Gothic brick church with a 67-metre tower, destroyed after wartime bombing.

Inside, Ernst Barlach’s crucifix stands alongside a 1994 Fischer & Krämer organ with 33 registers. Choirs and youth music groups keep the community house active, while a Baltic Sea retreat home hosts families and young people. This layered history remains visible in the contrast between the modern church and its older works.
