Maschinenhaus am Außenhaupt
Maschinenhaus am Außenhaupt stands within Bremen’s Nordschleuse complex, a maritime engineering site built for large ships. Karl Falge and Arnold Agatz designed the buildings between 1928 and 1931. New Objectivity shapes the brick architecture through flat roofs, graphic walls and distinctive corner windows. The Nordschleuse includes a turning basin and a swing bridge for rail and road traffic.
The machinery drives the lock gates and controls the swing bridge, giving the building a direct operational purpose. A later control stand adds a continuous window band and metal cladding. This contemporary section contrasts with the original brickwork while preserving its modernist character. Around it, the vast lock connects Bremen’s port ambitions with the era of the express steamers Bremen and Europa.
