The monument of Her Majesty Queen Sunanda Kumariratana and Her Royal Highness Princess Kannabhorn Bejraratana stands in Bangkok as a memorial to Thailand’s royal history. Its presence recalls Queen Sunanda’s place within the Chakri dynasty.
Born in 1860, Queen Sunanda was King Mongkut’s daughter and became King Chulalongkorn’s first queen consort. She was one of his four queens. On 31 May 1880, a royal boat carrying the queen and her daughter capsized while travelling to Bang Pa-In Royal Palace. Both drowned in the disaster, which also took the life of the queen’s unborn child. Royal decree forbade onlookers to touch the queen, even to save her life. King Chulalongkorn later raised the memorial to honour his wife, daughter, and unborn child. At Sanam Luang, he performed the royal cremation for the queen and princess.
