วังบางขุนพรหม
Bang Khun Phrom Palace stands on Bangkok’s east bank of the Chao Phraya River, in Phra Nakhon District. Its two buildings face different directions, with Tamnak Yai facing the road and Tamnak Somdet facing the water.
Mario Tamagno designed Tamnak Yai in neo-Baroque and Rococo styles, and construction followed between 1901 and 1902. Elaborate stucco, fresco murals, and period furniture shape its grand interior. Karl Döhring designed Tamnak Somdet around 1913 in German Jugendstil, with large windows welcoming the river breeze. Prince Paribatra Sukhumbandhu lived here until the Siamese Revolution of 1932 led to his exile in Indonesia. The palace later housed government offices, then became the Bank of Thailand’s headquarters in 1945.
The Pink Room recalls royal receptions, while the Blue Room displays photographs of visiting royalty. The Paribatra Room traces the prince’s work in military administration, art, and music. Exhibitions also cover the central bank’s history alongside Thai and foreign currencies. An ornate stucco entrance gives the riverside landmark a memorable architectural finish.
