Toegangsgebouw Sint-Annatunnel
Toegangsgebouw Sint-Annatunnel stands in Antwerp beside the Scheldt, forming the entrance to a pedestrian and cyclist route beneath the river. Built in 1931, the tunnel links the city’s left and right banks where ferries once provided the only crossing. Architect Emiel Van Averbeke designed the tunnel, its access buildings and ventilation structures in an interwar modernist style.
Large blocks of arduin give the entrance its strong, understated appearance. Each entrance building has fourteen stone-clad columns, and specialists restore the stones individually before returning them to the façade. Protected as heritage, the complex preserves an important chapter of Antwerp’s industrial and architectural history. The route still carries people on foot and by bicycle between both banks.
