Heilige Familie en Sint-Corneliuskerk

Heilige Familie en Sint-Corneliuskerk rises in Borgerhout, Antwerp, as a Roman Catholic cross basilica in French-inspired neo-Gothic style. Brick walls and natural-stone details frame a northeast tower reaching seventy-three metres. Three aisles, pointed arches, lightly gilded capitals and a white-plastered transept shape the interior.

Architect Franciscus Jacobus Maria Mertens designed the church as Borgerhout expanded beyond its agricultural beginnings. Construction began in 1908, worship started in 1909, and the solemn consecration followed in 1911. A Lourdes chapel on Koxplein, the churchwarden’s house and the 1910 rectory extend the complex along the surrounding streets. The buildings share the church’s neo-Gothic design and façade materials, while repairs from 1946 to 1951 followed wartime damage.

Inside, a marble and copper main altar stands beneath stained glass and rows of statues. Nave and transept windows use pale geometric forms, while the choir windows show scenes from the Holy Family’s life. A circular pulpit in white stone and red marble presents the twelve apostles, and four wooden confessionals date from 1916. A white-stone memorial in the eastern transept preserves the names of parishioners who died in the First World War.
