The Amsterdam Dungeon
The Amsterdam Dungeon takes you into Amsterdam’s darker history through live actors, theatrical sets, special effects, and a ride. It occupies the former Nieuwezijdse Kapel church in Amsterdam.
Inside, each scene explores a grim chapter, from witch hunts and torture to executions and ghost stories. The Descent sends you downward in elevators with the Black Jester. The Flying Dutchman unfolds inside the bar ’t Aepjen, where Captain Hendrik van der Decken’s ghost haunts the tale. Black John places you in an anatomy theatre during a scene involving Rembrandt and Dr. Deyman. The Council of Blood turns the Eighty Years’ War into an inquisition court, while the Labyrinth of Lost Amsterdam reflects the city’s confusing streets.
The former church closed in 1970, yet its dome still carries an actor’s echo during Gallow’s Field. A fake grave for Rembrandt van Rijn stands inside, although his actual grave lies in the Westerkerk. Beneath the building, several genuine graves remain hidden from visitors.
