Damslachtoffers 7 mei 1945 stands in Amsterdam near the original site of the shooting on Dam Square. The memorial consists of an original plaque and engraved stones set between Damrak and Nieuwendijk.
On 7 May 1945, thousands gathered here to celebrate Amsterdam’s liberation, only two days after Germany’s surrender. German soldiers in the Groote Club opened fire on the crowd around three in the afternoon, while Dutch forces exchanged fire with them for about two hours. Thirty-two people aged between eight and seventy-four died, and reports record between fifty and two hundred injured. Research later gave each victim a more personal place in the city’s memory.
Thirty-two stones now carry the victims’ names, each measuring about 60 by 40 centimetres and made in Belgium. An additional stone was installed in 2017 after another victim was identified.
