Station 12
Station 12, the Bauernkrieg Gedenkstein, stands in Altusried along the Geschichtswanderweg through the Allgäu. The memorial stone and plaque mark a site connected with the Battle of Leubas. This fierce confrontation formed part of the German Peasants’ War in the early sixteenth century. Nearby, the trail continues past old mills, bridges, chapels, and castles.
Allgäu peasants organised against rising tax burdens under Jörg Schmid, known as “der Knopf,” and Jörg Töuber. Their fortified position faced the Swabian League, commanded by the Truchsess von Waldburg. After inconclusive fighting, the peasants abandoned their position during the night for reasons that remain unclear. Farms were then plundered and burned, while eighteen uprising leaders, including Schmid, were beheaded. The stone keeps those local events visible beside the route, linking one quiet place with a violent chapter of regional history.
