Heilig Kreuz

Heilig Kreuz is a pilgrimage site in Gschnaidt, a small hamlet belonging to Altusried in the Allgäu. It stands on a hill between Kimratshofen and Frauenzell, surrounded by rolling hills and forest. Two chapels and the Gasthof zum Kreuz give the grounds their visible centre.

Pilgrims have come here since about the middle of the seventeenth century, seeking prayer, reflection, and shared religious observances. The chapels host services and provide a place for leaving prayer requests within the local parish community. Walkers through the Adelegg forest can encounter the grounds as part of a wider Allgäu landscape. The nearby guesthouse offers a setting for meals, rest, and gatherings after visiting the chapels.

The surrounding woodland contains around two thousand grave crosses placed by families in memory of deceased relatives. New crosses continue to join them, keeping a personal tradition visible among the trees. Together, the forest and chapels connect Catholic pilgrimage, remembrance, and the everyday landscape of Altusried.
